Thursday 28 May 2015
For immediate release
Book Links (Qld) Inc and Queensland Writers Centre (QWC) are delighted to announce the inaugural Book Links Lecture in Children’s Literature will be presented by lecturer, critic and editor Dr Robin Morrow AM from 6.00pm on Thursday 25 June 2015 at the State Library of Queensland.
‘Robin Morrow has dedicated her life to children’s books – as a lecturer, as a commentator, as a columnist and as a children’s bookseller – it is only fitting that she be the first speaker for this new annual lecture on children’s literature,’ Book Links President Jenny Stubbs said.
‘Drawing on her many years as a passionate advocate for children’s literature, Robin will inspire and challenge us to rethink what and how we let children read,’ Jenny said.
‘I am delighted to be presenting the first Book Links Lecture,’ Dr Robin Morrow AM said, ‘and to have the opportunity to further the national discussion about the value of children’s literature.’
Dr Morrow’s lecture – titled ‘Reading the wider world: book choices to expand the world view of young readers’ – will explore global perspectives on children’s and youth literature.
‘Children’s literature may be perceived as lacking substance when in reality many children’s books have a deep connection with social justice, both in their content and in the matter of access to reading material,’ Robin said, ‘it is important that we support and encourage young readers to make sense of their place in the world through the books they read.’
Starting this year, the lectures will be delivered annually and were established to raise the profile and value of children’s literature, to stimulate discussion and disseminate the results of current research on children’s literature.
‘QWC is proud to be presenting the lecture series with Book Links and championing children’s literature,’ QWC CEO Katie Woods said.
‘The lecture series is an important extension of our existing partnership with Book Links and demonstrates QWC’s commitment to literature across audiences, genres and formats,’ Katie said.
The lecture will be chaired by Dr Robyn Sheahan Bright, founding Executive Director and Life Member of Queensland Writers Centre.
Children’s authors, teachers and educators, librarians and the general public are encouraged to attend.
A transcript of the lecture will be available on the QWC website after the lecture.
